This is Carol writing this week and what a special week to be the writer!
We have had a week of tears, of joys, of being lost...in Washington, of being in complete awe and of being so full of pride to call ourselves Americans.
We began our week by visiting Arlington National Cemetery. It's hard to describe the feeling as we walked through fields of graves, many of soldiers who gave their lives in battle. They fought to give us our freedom but they also fought to give other countries the freedom they enjoy today. There were others who had served proudly in the Armed Forces or served in our government making decisions that brought us the great country that we live in today. Tears flowed as we watched the reverence and respect given at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. We were told that their are 400,000 graves and over 5,000 of them are unknown. Yes, I'm proud to be an American!
Our trip to the National Air and Space Museum, Udvar-Hazy Center was amazing. It was a little drive, but worth the trip. It was huge and had aircraft from the very beginning, through the World Wars, Korea and Vietnam eras. We took a two hour tour and our guide was excellent, not just telling us the history of flight but little stories that made it so interesting. We finished the tour with the Discovery. It flew 39 missions to outer space. Special to me because I had watched it so many times from my front yard. Another "wow" was the "Enola Gay", the bomber that dropped the Atomic Bomb on Hiroshima.
Another emotional visit was our trip in to the Vietnam War Memorial Candlelight Vigil. It was at 9:00pm. There was a very large crowd but you could hear a pin drop. As the Gold Star Mothers put wreaths on the wall, the bagpipes played Amazing Grace followed by the buglers playing Taps. I don't think there was a dry eye anywhere. As we left the area, we saw the monuments at night. What a beautiful sight.
All the walking and standing took it's tole on Bob's bad knee. He decided it best he take the next day off. Kristi and I went in and "experienced" the National Mall and the crowds enjoying the area. They were as interesting to watch as the monuments...well, almost. In a moment of weakness, we got ice cream, Kristi an Oreo sundae and I got a large coke float. So good!
Today, we all went in to see "Rolling Thunder" ride into the National Mall. We'd heard that there were very many, but didn't expect so many that it took 3 hours for them all to ride by. They were going at a pretty good speed, not a parade speed. It touched me when some of them saw Bob with his Retired USMC hat and POW shirt on and saluted him. There was a man across from us that held a large American flag up almost the whole time. I don't know how he did it!
We are almost completely 100% "clean eating" (no preservatives). We made our own butter, mayonnaise and bread. We've been spending extra time shopping to read labels. Try it the next time you shop....you will see what they are hiding in our food and in turn putting into our bodies!
My only disappointment is that we haven't connected with any campers. They are most big rigs and no one sits outside. Pray God will send us some to share with.
Oh, Oh, I almost forgot to share about the METRO!!! I love it! So quick and efficient and clean. It is the way to go in Washington!!!! I'm ready to tackle the New York City Subways!!!!
Thank you for your prayers ~
